A parent-child asset relationship is established by specifying an asset as the "Parent Asset" for another asset. In this configuration, the asset designated in the Parent Asset field is considered the parent, and the asset containing this designation is the child.
For example, consider two assets: Diesel Generator 1001 based on asset model Diesel Generator and Fuel Tank 1A based on asset model Fuel Tank. In this scenario, Fuel Tank 1A is the child asset, and it should be linked to Diesel Generator 1001 as its parent asset.
Before establishing a parent-child asset relationship, it's necessary to adjust the filter settings in the parent asset field of the child model. Initially, the default setting restricts associations to asset instances of the same model. You must modify the filter settings to include instances from different models.
Changing the parent field filter setting
To change the filter settings for the parent field,
Access the Developer Application.
Select Assets in the left pane. This will display the asset models list view.
Click on the name of the model of the child asset. This opens the asset model information page. For this illustration, the asset model: Fuel Tank is selected. Select Fields in the left pane and click Edit Form Layout. This will open the fields builder. Hover over the Parent Filed and select the ellipsis icon (...) that appears. Select Edit Properties in the context menu that appears. Click on the Models field and select the Models whose instances can be associated as the parent asset. For this illustration, the asset model: Diesel Generator is selected.
Note: If you don't want any filtering and allow instances from any model to be associated as the parent asset, you can disable the filter models option.
Click Save.
The changes made to the filter will now be updated.
Assigning a parent asset to a child asset
To create a parent-child asset network,
Access the End Application.
Select Assets in the left pane. This will open the assets list view.
Select the check box adjacent to the asset you want as the child asset and click the Edit button that appears. For this illustration, Fuel Tank 1A is considered as the child asset. Click on the Parent Asset filed and select the asset you need as the parent asset. For this illustration, Diesel Generator 1001 is considered as the parent asset. Click Update.
The selected asset will now be assigned as the parent asset, and a parent-asset relationship is formed.
