Is there a limit to changing the subscription type of the contacts?

Yes, there is a limit to changing the subscription type of your contacts in Zoho Marketing Automation. This limit is present at an organizational level and is set at 300%.

Before explaining about this 300% limit, there should be an understanding of why this limit is in place.

Scenario:
As you're aware, Zoho Marketing Automation's pricing is based on the number of marketing contacts you want to purchase. Consider that you're purchasing license for 1,000 marketing contacts. The license is applicable only for marketing contacts and not non-marketing contacts. Hence, you can add non-marketing contacts to your organization irrespective of whether you've added 1,000 marketing contacts or not.

Let's say an user has already created and sent marketing campaigns for these 1,000 marketing contacts. They've reached the license limit. They would like to send campaigns to some of the non-marketing contacts. Consider that they have 2,500 non-marketing contacts.

The next step would be to purchase more licenses, but to circumvent this, they can change the subscription type of these 1,000 marketing contacts to non-marketing. Then, change the subscription type of some of the 2,500 non-marketing contacts to marketing and send campaigns for these new marketing contacts.

This can create an infinite loop – wherein a user can keep on sending campaigns by changing the subscription type of the contacts without having to purchase license for additional marketing contacts – as long as they add non-marketing contacts.

Why there's a limit:
To prevent users from circumventing purchasing additional licenses for marketing contacts, there's a limit to changing the subscription type of the contacts.

How the limit is enforced:
The limit is set at 300% for each organization based on the license purchased. If you have 1,000 marketing contacts, you can change the subscription type 300% of 1,000 marketing contacts – so, the subscription type can be changed for 3,000 contacts. Change of subscription type can be from one type to any other type for you to hit the limit.

If you try changing the subscription type for more than that, you'll face an error. The next course of action is to purchase additional licenses to send further campaigns.
