Best Practices for Online Classrooms

Educators around the world are supporting students in powerful ways online. Here are a few tips to help teachers and students get ready for online classes with Zoho Meeting.

Preparing for Your Online Classes

Practicing and preparing beforehand will ensure you have the very best experience. Below are some of the best practices to ensure you have a successful online class:

Set up learning environment:

  • A learning space, such as a desk in a bedroom or living room, should be consistent with where schoolwork is done. This space should be comfortable and accessible during the school day.

  • Try to find a quiet place free of distractions like TV or lots of people coming and going.

  • Use a virtual background if it’s permitted by your school to feel more comfortable turning on your camera.

Check System Requirements:

Zoho Meeting works with all modern browsers, operating systems and mobile devices. Refer the system requirements help page for more details on supported browsers, compatible operating Systems, internet speed, and so on.

WiFi connection:

Set up your device near the WiFi router or access point for better connection at home.

Hardwire your internet connection:

If your wifi connection is poor connect to your router using an ethernet cable. This will help you avoid any issues with an unstable wifi connection during online classes.

Test the audio/video before your class begins:

  • Ensure your mic, speaker, and webcam are connected properly before the class begins.

  • Choose Computer Audio in the audio devices. Once you select the audio, make sure the green line is visible on your computer to make sure your microphone is working properly.

  • Similarly, choose video devices from the dropdown to ensure it is turned on.

  • For Speaker, click the Play button, you will get a ping sound to indicate that the speaker is working properly.

  • If you've followed all of the above procedures and are still having trouble connecting, check your system preferences/system settings for sound. You have to give permission at the system level for the apps which you are using.

In-session challenges

Start on time:

  • We recommend teachers start your classes five minutes early to allow your students to join before the content kicks off. The teacher should let students know when the class will begin and if the content will be recorded and shared after ward.

  • Establish proceedings for the meeting chat section and let the students know in the introduction how you’ll be answering their questions and other engagement options available.

Enable browser access to microphone and camera:

When you start or join meetings from your browser, a pop-up in your browser will request permission to access your microphone and camera. You need to enable these permissions by clicking Allow in order to transmit audio and video from your microphone and camera.

Keep all students muted when you start:

Students can join a meeting only after the teachers starts the meeting. If you are a teacher, use the Mute all option to cancel noise and maintain decorum while starting the class.

Use an external headset:

We highly recommend that you use an external headset for your classes instead of built-in computer microphone and speakers. With an external headset, you can have better quality audio reception and transmission with the least amount of interference.

Close duplicate tabs :

Joining through two different browsers or the desktop app in the same computer may cause an echo. Make sure the duplicate tabs are closed.

Raise your hand:

If you want to contribute something during the classes, use the raise hand option in your meeting controls to make your voice heard without disrupting other students.

Audio :

If any one of the students reports about audio issues, immediately ask them to move to the phone dial-in option available in the settings for better clarity. If more students are reporting on the audio quality, check the connectivity in the Settings tab to get a clear picture.

Video :

If any of the students reports on video breakage or choppiness, ask them to stop videos receiving in the Settings tab. If more students are reporting on the video, please check the connectivity in the Settings tab to get a clear picture.
