In addition to direct messaging, you can create channels for different teams or schedules to interact with your team members as a group. You can also create announcement channels where you can restrict the participants from posting any messages on the channel.
Before you start
To create a channel, you’ll need the Manage channels permission enabled.
Create a channel
- Select Messages from the top.
- Click Channels from the left pane.
- Click the + icon next to Channels. The Create Channel window will appear.
- Enter a name and description for the channel in the space provided.
- To create announcement channel, uncheck the Allow everyone to send messages on this channel box.
- Click Save.
Add participants to channel
To add participants to a channel, you’ll need to be a Channel admin or Channel moderator.
- Select Messages from the top.
- Click Channels from the left pane.
- Click the channel name from the list to which you want to add participants.
- Click participants links below the channel name.
- Select Add participant and search participants by name or email address.
- Click on the names of the contacts to add them to the channel.
You can also click on multiple contacts to add them to the channel. - Click the Add button.
Click the Actions dropdown in the bottom-right corner of the chat window to perform the below actions:
Edit channel
You can change the channel name, description, participation setting for the channel using Edit channel option. The options to archive or delete a channel is also available in Edit channel. To edit channel, you’ll need to be a channel admin or channel moderator.
Archive channel:
If the channel is not needed at some point, you can Archive and select Unarchive when needed. To archive a channel, you’ll need to be a channel admin or channel moderator. To archive a channel:
- Click the Actions dropdown in the bottom-right corner of the chat window.
- Click Edit Channel.
- Click
next to the Continue button.
- Select Archive from the dropdown list.
- Click the Yes, Archive button from the confirmation popup.
Once a channel is archived, it will no longer be active to carry out conversations. The chat history will be saved and will be available again on unarchiving.
Delete channel:
Once you delete a channel, the conversation history can not be retrieved. To delete a channel, you’ll need to be a channel admin or channel moderator.To delete a channel:
- Click the Actions dropdown in the bottom-right corner of the chat window.
- Click Edit Channel.
- Click
next to the Continue button.
- Click Delete. A confirmation dialog will appear.
- Select Yes, delete.
Leave a channel:
Participants of a channel can leave the channel after which they will not be able to send or receive any messages from that channel. To Leave channel a channel:
- Select Messages from the top.
- Click Channels from the left pane.
- Click the channel name from which you wanted to exit.
- Click the Actions dropdown in the bottom-right corner of the chat window.
- Click the Leave Channel option.
Once you leave a channel, it will not be listed in your messages tab and you can only rejoin the channel if the channel admin or moderator adds you again.
Mute a channel:
Muting a channel helps to stop any notifications for the conversation happening on that channel. This helps with less distraction and you can view those messages at your convenience. We have options to choose the duration for how long you wanted to mute the channel. To mute a channel:
- Select Messages from the top.
- Click Channels from the left pane.
- Click the channel name from which you wanted to exit.
- Click the Actions dropdown in the bottom-right corner of the chat window.
- Hover over the Mute Chat option and choose the mute time duration from the list, such as an hour 8 hours, 1 day, 1 week, or Forever.
