What are email tracking pixels, and can Trident (macOS) detect them?

On a daily basis, you might receive a myriad of emails—the majority of them being newsletters and promotional emails. In addition to sending these emails to you, these companies would want to know if you've read their email so they can use that information for marketing purposes. They rely on spy pixels (also known as web pixels) to track your emails.

A spy pixel is a 1 x 1 tracking pixel that is embedded in the emails you receive. You won’t be able to see this pixel, but it can pick up your private data, such as the following, and report it back to the sender.

  • Email read status

  • Date and time opening email

  • Geographical location

  • IP address

Trident automatically detects emails containing spy pixels and displays a warning. When you open an email with a tracking pixel, a unique symbol appears to indicate that the email is being tracked.

If you find these emails harmful, you can choose to unsubscribe from these senders or block and reject all future emails from them.
