Using One-on-One Chat, Group, and Channel Message Features in Trident (macOS)

In this article, we'll explore the various message features that facilitate effective communication in one-on-one chats, groups, and channels.

Editing a Message

To edit a message you have sent:

  1. Hover over the message and click the More Options  icon.

  2. Select Edit from the menu list.

  3. Make the necessary changes in the chat box.

  4. Check Notify Others to alert the recipient of the edited message.

  5. Otherwise, simply hit the return key to send the message.

Viewing Edit History  

To view edit history:

  1. Click the Edited label.

  2. In the dialog that opens, you will find the version history of the edited message.  


Alternatively, you can also:
  1. Hover over the message and click the More Options  icon.

  2. Select View Edit History from the menu list.

 Deleting a Message  

To delete a message:

  1. Hover over the message and click the More Options   icon.

  2. Select Delete from the menu list.

  3. Click Delete Message in the alert dialog box that appears.

NotesNote: You can only delete messages you have sent, and they will be deleted both for you and the recipient.

Replying to a Message  

To reply to a specific message:

  1. Hover over the message and click the Reply  icon.

  2. Type your message in the chat box.

  3. Hit the return key to send it.



Alternatively, you can also:
  1. Hover over the message and click the More Options  icon.

  2. Select Reply from the menu list.

 

Replying Privately to a Message   

You can reply privately to messages in Cliq channels, threaded conversations, and group chats. To do so:

  1. Hover over the message and click the More Options  icon.

  2. Select Reply Privately from the menu list.

Forwarding a Message   

To forward a message:

  1. Hover over the message and click the More Options  icon.

  1. Select Forward from the menu list and click the Forward icon.

  1. Search for the name of the contact in the Search Bar and hit the return key to select the contact.

  1. Check Show "Original Sender" Info to reveal the point source of the chat.

  2. Click the Send  icon.

Forwarding Multiple Messages

To forward multiple messages:

  1. Select Forward from the menu list.

  2. Check all the messages you want to forward and click the Forward  icon.

  3. Search for the name of the contact in the Search Bar and hit the enter key to select the contact.

  4. Check Show "Original Sender" Info to reveal the point source of the chat.

  5. Click the Send  icon. 

Notes Note: With Smart Flow, you can also drag and drop text messages from from one chat box to another to forward them.

Starring a Message   

Starred messages allow you to classify specific messages so you can quickly refer to them later. The various types of stars that are available are mentioned below.

To star a message:

  1. Hover over the message and click the More Options    icon.

  2. Select Star from the menu list.

  3. Choose the star type you would like to assign to the message and a star will appear next to the message you have starred.


NotesNote: You can only assign one type of star per message.

To assign a different star to an already starred message:

  1. Hover over the message and click the More Options  icon.

  2. Select Star from the menu list.

  3. Choose a different star from the available options.



Unstarring a Message   

There are two options for unstarring a message:

  • Deselect the assigned star from the drop-down menu.



  • Click on the existing star icon next to the message.



Viewing All Starred Messages   

To view all of your stared messages:

  1. Click the More Options  icon in the app menu bar.

  2. Select Starred Messages from the menu list.

The pop-over will display all your starred chats under the respective tabs: All, Important, To-do, Note, Manager, and Follow-up. To view the Starred Messages in a pop-over, click the message. To open the chat in a window, click Open Chat.


Forking a Chat   

To start a new conversation from an existing chat, you can fork it. To do so:

  1. Hover over the message and click the More Options  icon.

  2. Select Fork From Here from the menu list.

  3. Add users to the forked chat by typing their name or email address and selecting it from the list of suggestions by hitting the return key.

  4. Keep the option Include participants of this conversation checked to have them as a participant in the forked chat.

  5. Click the Tick  icon.



Setting a Message Reminder   

To set a reminder for any chat message:

  1. Hover over the message and click the More Options  icon.

  2. Select Set Reminder from the menu list.

  3. In the reminder dialog box, type in the title and choose the preferred date and time.

  4. Select the person for whom the reminder is intended by choosing between Remind Me, Remind Others, or Remind in This Conversation..

  5. Click Save Reminder.


Pinning a Message   

You can pin a message in your chat box to keep it at the top of the conversation. To do so:

  1. Hover over the message and click the More Options  icon.

  2. Select Pin from the menu list.

  3. Choose the desired time frame you want to pin the message for.

  4. Check the Notify button if you want to notify the participants of the chat.

  5. Click Pin.

Notes:

  • You cannot pin more than one message in a chat.

  • If you do, the existing pinned message will be replaced by the latest pinned message.

  • When you edit a pinned message, the message gets automatically updated in the pin.

Unpinning a Message   

To unpin a message:

  1. Navigate to the pinned message at the top of the chat box.

  2. Click the More Options  icon.

  3. Select Unpin from the menu list.



Modifying Pinned Duration    

To modify for how long the message stays pinned:

  1. Navigate to the pinned message at the top of the chat box.

  2. Click the More Options  icon.

  3. Select the current duration from the menu list.

  4. Update the duration by choosing one from the list of available options.


Using Slash Commands     

You can use built-in and custom slash commands to execute actions instantly right from the chatbox. Let's take a look at the built-in commands available in Trident.

/pin

Pins a chat under My Pins.

/unpin

Unpins a chat from My Pins.

/mute

Mutes a chat for a specific period of time.

/unmute

Unmutes the chat.

/mail

Mails the current chat transcript to recipients.  

/schedulemessage

Schedules messages to be sent later.

/feedback

Opens a feedback window for you to add comments and share log files to submit them to Trident for analysis.

Using Other Chat Message Features 

In addition to the message features above, there are a host of other options that can help you make meaningful conversations. To access these chat message features:

  1. Hover over the message and click the More Option  icon.

  2. Choose the required option from the menu list.

Demonstration

Copy Text

To copy chat contents to the clipboard. The copied content can be pasted in the chat box and other input fields or text editors using command + V.

Copy Message URL

To copy the chat's URL. Can be shared with other users to give them context.

Mark as Unread

To mark a read message as unread so you can get back to it later.

You can also mark a message as unread by right-clicking the chat in the chat list and selecting Mark as Unread from the menu list.  

Note: If it hasn't updated automatically, you can mark a message as read manually using the Mark as Read option.

View Message Read Status

To view who has read your message and when they read it. However, if users have turned their read receipts off, you won't be able to see the message read status.
