Trident's Mail module offers customization options across three areas: Mail Layout, Mail View, and Mail Composer.
To access the Mail module's customization settings:
- Click your profile image in the top-right corner of the app.
- Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
- Select Mail.
Customizing Mail Layout
The Mail Layout customizations help you control how your inbox is structured and how emails appear in the list and detail views.
To customize the Mail Layout:
- Click your profile image in the top-right corner of the app.
- Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
- Select Mail.
- Customize the settings under Mail Layout Options.
Open Mails in: Choose how the screen is split when viewing emails.
- Vertical Split: Displays the email list on the left and the email content on the right side-by-side.
- Horizontal Split: Places the email list on top and the content below.
- No Split: Shows only one panel at a time, switching fully between the list and detail view.
List view style: Set the email list density to Comfort (more details) or Compact (fewer details).
Unread email view: Display unread emails with Rich (vivid highlights) or Lite (subtle highlights) formatting.
Note: You can also access the Open Mails in, List view style, and Unread email view customization settings from More Options in the email list.
Detail view style: Set the spacing in the reading pane to Comfort (more details) or Compact (fewer details).
Email preview in list view: Choose how many lines of an email's body are previewed in the list.
Show sender's photo in list view: Toggle to view the sender's profile photo next to each email.
Customizing Mail View
The Mail View customizations control how individual emails are displayed and how Trident behaves when you interact with them.
To customize the Mail View:
- Click your profile image in the top-right corner of the app.
- Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
- Go to Mail > Mail View Options.
Conversation mode: Group emails with the same subject into a single threaded conversation.
Show Streams comments in popover: Display Streams comments in a popover overlay instead of inline.
After deleting, marking as spam, or archiving emails: Choose whether to go to the next email, the previous email, or return to the email list after an action.
Mail action button style in detail view: Set how action buttons appear in the reading pane — icon and label, only icon, or only label.
List attachments: Show file attachments either below or above the email body.
Mark email as read: Set when an email is marked as read.
- Upon Opening the Email: As soon as you open the email in the detail view, it will be marked as read.
- After x Seconds: After you view the email for the chosen duration, it will be marked as read.
- When the Email Selection Changes: No matter how long you view the email, it won't be marked as read unless you view another email.
- Manually: You must manually click the Mark as Read icon each time.
Send read receipts: Choose when to send read receipts to the sender.
- Always: Sends a receipt every time.
- Never: Does not send a receipt any time.
- Ask Me: Prompts you each time a receipt is requested, letting you decide on a case-by-case basis.
Note: Sending read receipts can be customized for each logged-in Zoho Mail account. Select the desired email account from the drop-down menu, then set when read receipts should be sent.
Customizing Mail Composer
The Mail Composer customizations control how the compose window behaves and which fields appear by default when writing an email.
To customize the Mail Composer:
- Click your profile image in the top-right corner of the app.
- Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
- Go to Mail > Mail Composer.
Open composer: Choose how the compose window opens.
- Inline: Opens the composer in the email detail view inside Trident.
- In New Window: Opens a separate, dedicated window for composing.
- Floating: Opens a compact, resizable overlay window that lets you reference other emails while composing.
Outbox delay: Hold sent emails in the Outbox for a brief period, giving you a window to cancel or edit them.
Undo interval: Set the number of seconds you would like to have as a window to cancel sending the email.
Ask receipts: Prompts recipients to send a read receipt each time you send an email.
Show Cc field: Show the Cc field by default in the compose window.
Show Bcc field: Show the Bcc field by default in the compose window.
Note: Even when you disable the Cc and Bcc fields in the Settings, you can access them by clicking the Cc and Bcc options at the right-end of the To field in the Mail Composer.
Note: Setting the outbox delay and undo interval, showing the Cc/Bcc fields, and requesting receipts can be customized for each logged-in Zoho Mail account. Select the desired email account from the drop-down menu, then customize the settings to your needs.
Switching Between Dark and Light Modes
In addition to the Dark, Light, and System themes available in Trident's customization options, you can also switch between Light and Dark modes in the Mail Composer according to your preference. You can do so by clicking the View in Dark Mode
or View in Light Mode
icon, respectively.
When you're using Trident in the Dark Theme, you can view email details in both Light and Dark modes. You can do so by clicking the Switch to Dark Mode
or Switch to Light Mode
icon, respectively.

Using Trackpad Gestures
Trident supports the following trackpad gestures to perform useful actions, such as shifting between read and unread emails in a folder, marking an email as read or unread, and archiving or deleting an email.
On the email list view:
- Pinch in: To view all the unread emails in the selected folder.
- Pinch out: To view all the emails, read and unread, in the selected folder.
On the individual email entity in the email list view:
- Swipe left to right: To mark an email as read or unread.
- Swipe right to left: To archive or delete the email.
On the folder list:
- Force touch: To mark a folder as read.
Using Shortcuts
Trident offers several keyboard shortcuts for using the Mail module. To view these shortcuts:
- Click your profile image in the top-right corner of the app.
- Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
- Select Shortcuts.
- In the Mail and Compose sections, you'll find the shortcuts mentioned below.
