How to setup transliteration (phonetic typing) in Zoho Writer?

Overview

Transliteration in Zoho Writer lets you type in different Indian languages using an English keyboard. As you type phonetically (the way a word sounds), Writer automatically converts your text into the corresponding characters of the selected language.

For example, if you type “thamizh”, it will appear as “தமிழ்” when Tamil transliteration is enabled and “namaste” for “नमस्ते” in Hindi. This makes it easy to write in your preferred language without switching keyboard layouts. Transliteration is different from translation, it focuses on sound-based conversion, not meaning.

Supported languages

Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu.

Limitation

Transliteration is not supported in the Desktop app or in offline mode.

Steps to Enable Transliteration

Open your document in Zoho Writer.
Click the hamburger menu to open the left panel.
Go to the Tools tab.
Under the Editing section, turn on Transliteration.
From the dropdown, select your desired language.

You can now start typing in English. Writer will automatically display suggestions in the chosen language. Select the correct word from the suggestions list as you type.

1. What is the difference between transliteration and translation?
Transliteration converts text based on how it sounds, while translation converts text based on its meaning.

2. Can I use transliteration offline?
No. Transliteration requires an active internet connection.

3. How do I switch to another language?
Go back to hamburger menu > Tools > Transliteration, and select a different language from the list.

4. I need a language that’s not listed. Can I request it?
Yes. You can send your language request to support@zohowriter.com and the team will consider it for future updates.
