Overview
Transliteration in Zoho Writer lets you type in different Indian languages using an English keyboard. As you type phonetically (the way a word sounds), Writer automatically converts your text into the corresponding characters of the selected language.
For example, if you type “thamizh”, it will appear as “தமிழ்” when Tamil transliteration is enabled and “namaste” for “नमस्ते” in Hindi. This makes it easy to write in your preferred language without switching keyboard layouts. Transliteration is different from translation, it focuses on sound-based conversion, not meaning.
Supported languages
Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu.
Limitation
Transliteration is not supported in the Desktop app or in offline mode.
Steps to Enable Transliteration
- Open your document in Zoho Writer.
- Click the hamburger menu to open the left panel.
- Go to the Tools tab.
- Under the Editing section, turn on Transliteration.
- From the dropdown, select your desired language.
You can now start typing in English. Writer will automatically display suggestions in the chosen language. Select the correct word from the suggestions list as you type.
Troubleshooting
Symptom: Transliteration doesn’t work as expected or produces incorrect results
Recommended solution:
- Try spelling the words phonetically, exactly as they sound. For example, type “naan” instead of “nan” for “நான்”.
- If transliteration results are still inaccurate, try using an IME (Input Method Editor) keyboard for your language. Most operating systems come with built-in input tools for major Indian languages.
