Gutter and mirror margins for binding

How to configure gutter & mirror margins for binding documents

Overview

When preparing documents for printing—especially for binding or booklet layouts—gutter margins create extra space to ensure text near the spine isn’t obscured. For two-side (duplex) or facing-page layouts, the mirror margins feature intelligently alternates margin alignment to keep content balanced on both odd and even pages. This ensures your printed document looks professional and remains fully readable after binding.

Set Gutter Margins

Gutter margins add additional space to extend the regular margins to provide a buffer for the space that will be consumed by binding. This will prevent the page content from becoming hidden after binding. Writer allows you to set the gutter margin position and size for your documents.

Set Mirror Margins

While printing documents with content on both pages or facing page layouts, the margins are mirrored, meaning, the width of the margins on the left page is mirrored to that on the right page. Enabling mirror margins will set the wider margin on the left side for odd numbered pages/left sided pages and on the right side for even numbered pages/right sided pages to ensure that they are even from the spine of the book.

Idea
  1. A gutter is a section-level property and we can add different gutter for each section.
  2. Mirror margins are a document-level property and will be applied to the whole document.
