The terms lead time and cycle time are widely used in Kanban. These are important metrics to gauge project management efforts.
What are cycle and lead time?
It is vital to measure the cycle and lead times of a projects course to help you get a better understanding of the progress of work. This method will help identify issues that are there in the process and come up with solutions to overcome them. This will finally result in timely delivery of quality products and services.
Lead Time - Industry definition is, "Lead time is the amount of time taken to complete an item from the time it was first requested."
Ideally, lead time is started to measure when a team member takes up a new work item. In terms of Zoho Sprints, lead time is considered to range from the time the item is first created to the time the item is closed.

Cycle Time - The industry definition is, "Cycle time is the amount of time taken by a team or an individual to work on an item up to when it is ready to be delivered."
In terms of Zoho Sprints, cycle time is considered to range from the time the item is first moved to the Kanban board to the time the item is closed.

Lead time is used to measure the entire process from the time of arrival of a new request, whereas cycle time is used to measure the time taken for the actual work on that request. Both these metrics give varying perspectives and help us calculate the time taken on average and make projections for completion and estimations for subsequent work items.
For cycle time, the WIP limit is a significant factor. The formula used is:
Cycle Time = Work in Progress / Throughput*
*Here, throughput is the total number of work items that get across the board over a certain period of time. Work in progress (WIP), on the other hand, takes into account how many active items exist in each of the stage.
