Marketing Tip #38: Increase order value with free shipping thresholds


Free shipping is one of the easiest ways to nudge customers to spend a little more. Instead of offering free shipping on every order, set a minimum order value customers need to reach. This encourages shoppers to add one more item to their cart, which helps increase your average order value without giving away shipping on smaller purchases.

Try this today:

Set a free shipping threshold that is slightly above your current average order value, and highlight it clearly on your store's interface.

Steps to set up a free shipping threshold:

In your Zoho Commerce web app, go to Settings –> Shipping & Pickup (under Sales) –> +Add Shipping Rate. In the field "Shipping Rate Type," select Order Value and set a minimum and maximum value, then enter the shipping rate. For free shipping, simply enter 0 as the rate.

You can also communicate free shipping through the Message Bar which appears at the top of your website.

Go to Settings –> Preferences (under Online Store)–> Enable the Message Bar option –> Click Configure –> Enter the required text and click Save.

Pro tips:

  • Keep the threshold close enough to feel reachable.

  • Use simple messaging like "Free shipping on orders above ____."

  • Promote it on product pages and in the cart, where it can influence decisions most.

  • Pair it with low-cost add-ons or bundles to help customers cross the threshold faster.
