Production Order Tracking

We are looking for a solution that once a sales order is written and sent to the production floor it can be tracked through each production stage / process. For example:

Sales Order ---> Material Pulled ---> Cut & Processed ---> Bent ---> Finishing / packaged ---> Delivery

Something where at each stage it can be marked with a status (complete, in progress, waiting etc..). even better if it would automate a notification (email) to our customer to let them know where its at in the process. 

Perhaps each station in our production facility can have an ipad to mark that its done. They could also view all of the ticket details and any pdf attachments (like specification drawings) associated with the sales order (work order / ticket). 

Let me know if something like this is possible?

Even if we have to custom build this any help would be greatly appreciated.
