Report of the Week - How to create a Bullet Chart?

A Bullet Chart is best suited to highlight a metric and compare it with a target value. You can also represent qualitative ranges of performance (or targets) such as poor, satisfactory, and good nicely in a bullet chart. The qualitative ranges are displayed as varying intensities of a single hue for easy comparison.

A Bullet chart widget in Zoho Reports looks as shown below. In our example we have plotted the Sales in 2018. The blue bar denotes the total sales done so far. The grey line is the target and shades of grey in the background denote the ranges. The values at start and end of the chart is the minimum and maximum value.

Please do note that this is a Chart type widget (widgets that enable you to highlight your data metric using chart visuals) and can be created only in a dashboard.

Steps to create a Bullet chart:

Let's now see how to create this bullet chart widget. We have created this chart widget over the sales data.

  • Open a dashboard
  • Click Add widget . The KPI Widget editor will open.
  • In the  Select Widget section, select  Bullet Chart .
  • In the  Select Columns section, select the  Data Column  and the  Group By  column. In our example, we are selecting Sales (Sum)  in the Data Column and grouping it by the  Date (Year)  column.
  • The  Value drop-down  allows you to apply an advanced summary function such as Sum, Avg, Min, Max etc over the selected  Data  column. Select  Latest . This will by default sum the value of the latest year (2018).
  • In the Target  drop-down, you can either apply the summary functions or specify a constant value in this field. We are setting a constant value of 100,000 as the target
  • In the Maximum Range section, set a maximum range for the widget. You can either choose to apply the summary functions or specify a constant value in this field. We are setting a constant value 200,000 in this example.
  • In the  Settings tab provide options to format the widget. With this, you will be able to customize the various aspects of the Bullet Chart.
  • Once you have made the necessary customizations, click  Apply .
