Ruler always on landscape, also if page layout on portrait

I encountered a strange issue that makes working with Writer very tiresome.
 
I usually use portrait format for letters and have also set up the page layout accordingly. Nevertheless, the ruler and what is shown in the browser seems to remain on landscape format (11.5 inches wide).
 
This is very cumbersome as one never knows what the final format looks like, e.g. when inserting pictures or using titles etc.
 
When changing the page layout through the ruler by e.g. setting the right indent to 7.5 in (approx. the wide of a portrait side), this does not work as it should: Not the page wide is set to 7.5 inches. Instead, the right indent is set to minus 4 inches. Accordingly, the right indent is then finally for portrait sites at 3.5 inches.
 
Any hope that this is remedied in the future?
