Sorting

Sorting

Zoho Writer can now sort text, number, or dates. You can quickly and easily sort bulleted, numbered, or plain lists of text.

To sort text:

  • Highlight the text using the mouse.
  • Then, go to the Format menu, and click or right click the mouse in the editor to find the Sort option.

The Sort window will pop up. A field is always selected as soon as you place the cursor in the field (i.e., paragraphs/ list/ table).

  • Select Ascending or Descending.

Ascending order organizes the text in alphabetical order, from A to Z, from 0 to 9. Descending order will order the text in the reverse direction. Z to A or 9 to 0. If you select the case sensitive option, it will sort the text from lower case to upper case if ascending order is chosen. Descending order will sort from upper case to lower case.

Click OK.

Your text will now be sorted based on the sort options you selected.

Sorting a list:

For example:

The list to be sorted:

  • Illinois
  • Ohio
  • Michigan
  • Texas
  • Washington
  • Florida

  • Alaska

  1. Click on the Sort button in the Format menu.
  2. Choose what you are sorting (String in this case) and select Ascending order.
  3. Click OK.

Note that the “Then by” options are not active. This method only works on one column.

The sorted list:

  • Alaska
  • Florida
  • Illinois
  • Michigan
  • Ohio
  • Texas
  • Washington

To sort the contents of a table:

Zoho Writer sorts the selected table columns either alphabetically or numerically. Tables are easier to analyze when the data is sorted. To sort data in a table:

  • Click anywhere in the table where you wish to sort.

  • Click on the sort button.

  • Specify which column you want to sort by. Column 1 is the default setting.

  • Choose the type of data you are sorting such as string, numbers, or dates.

  • When you select Treat first row as header row, the data in the header row is not sorted with the rest of the rows.

  • In the first Then by list, enter the column that contains the data that you want to sort by, and then select what you want to sort by. If you want to sort by an additional column, repeat this step in the second Then by list.

Click OK. The data in the table will be sorted according to the sort options. The screenshot below illustrates the above steps.
