What are some of the relationships?

I suspect it's old age, but I'm a bit confused about some of the Zoho Application Relationships.

Why is there Creator and a separate database?
Why is there Docs and Writer, that seem just a bit different from each other?
Why Planner and Calendar?

Are there advantages to one over the other?

Is there any "buyers' guide" type thing that compares the features in common and different of the various applications?
