Shortening the "Update Profile" process

You can add a link to an email that lets people update their profile. But, unless I'm missing something, this process could be a couple of steps shorter. At the moment:
  1. The user clicks on the 'Update Profile' link.
  2. They get sent an email with another link they have to press to get another email sent to them about updating their profile.
  3. They get sent another email with a link they have to press to take them to the page where they can update their profile.
I can't think of a reason - not even security - why clicking the link in step 1 shouldn't take you straight to the web page to update your profile. The email you get at step 1 is just as secure as the email you get at step 3, isn't it?
