simultaneous collaboration fails

I tried sharing a notebook with a friend but most of the things he wrote did not appear on my screen and vice versa. At some point it seemed to work but only for shapes and text (pen still did not appear) but then it started malfunctioning again. Is there a way this can be fixed in order to be able to see what each other writes and have real-time collaboration?
