Batch tracking for composite items issue

Seems as though the new batch tracking feature cripples the composite item feature as you're unable to add tracked items to a composite item.

The problem is that you can't add tracking to an item at a later date after it's been used in a transaction, so there's no "add tracking in the future" option.

How this made it past testing is unknown... It's on the mystical roadmap as we've all heard before according to support.

Has anyone come up with a work around?
