Can I call a custom function in a formula?

Can I call a custom function in a formula?

I have created a custom formula to calculate the current balance of an account and I would like to use that in a formula so that I can display it to the user when they are filling out a form. When I try to reference it like I would in a workflow script (e.g. formulaname(param)) I just get "Expression not supported in formula." Is that because I do not have the correct syntax, or because Zoho Creator doesn't support calling a custom function from a formula?
