Editing the items in a Group

If I accidentally add an item to a group how do I remove that item from the group?

It seems that once I add an item to a group it is forever stuck in that group. If I make the group inactive it in activates all the items that were in that group.

Even if I make those items active again, they are still stuck in the inactive group and not available to add to a new group.

So if I make a mistake in creating a group am I forever stuck with that mistake?
