Certain format functions not working

I use Notebook on my Mac for uni and have updated it twice over the semester break. Both updates seem to have the highlight option either disabled or not working. There's also a font colour button that doesn't seem to work either. This is only when using my mouse to click the options because I can't find a shortcut for these features in the shortcut menu either.

It's really annoying because I like to try and use as much formatting to differentiate between headings and highlight important information to make it easier to find when reviewing my notes later.
