Introducing Serial Number tracking in Zoho Inventory

Hope you're all doing great!

As your business grows, you'll need more and more control over the flow of your inventory. For example, you'll need to be able to uniquely identify every single unit that comes in and goes out of your warehouse. This pin-point precision is very much important for handling many day-to-day business scenarios.

With that in mind, we're happy and excited in bringing Serial Number tracking to Zoho Inventory.

Why do I need serial number tracking?

"Hey, the touchpad in the laptop I bought from you isn't working as it should. Can you please replace it?"

Not exactly the best way to start your day, but more often than not, you'll be facing situations like this in your business - especially in the electronics, automobile or any industry where replacements, warranties etc., are quite common. In most of these cases, you need to track which piece that was sold to the customer turned out to be defective. If you have this information, you can get it from your customer, and contact your vendor for a replacement or do the replacement yourself if possible. This is why you need serial number tracking.

Here's what you get with this release:

Add serial numbers right when you add products into your Inventory

You can assign serial numbers to items right when you add them to your Inventory for the first time. Just add in an opening stock, and the serial numbers for the same, and you're good to go!

Specify serial numbers during Invoice and Bill creation

From purchase to sales, we've got the entire flow covered. Assign serial numbers when you raise a Bill for your purchase, and select the ones you want to sell when creating an Invoice. With this, you know what was bought from whom, and to whom it was sold.

If you have multiple warehouses, you can have different serial numbers for different warehouses and then select the required serial numbers from the appropriate warehouse. You can also select serial numbers when you use Transfer Orders to transfer goods from one warehouse to another.

Enabling Serial Number Tracking

To enable serial number tracking in your organisation, navigate to Settings -> Preferences -> Items and enable Serial Number Tracking. Please note that this feature is available only if your organisation is in the Standard plan or above.
