"Inventory tracking cannot be enabled or disabled for items that have transactions."

I'm trying to enable inventory tracking for all items in my company's inventory but I keep running into this "Inventory tracking cannot be enabled or disabled for items that have transactions" issue.

This seems to suggest that in order to enable inventory tracking on the affected items, I have to delete their corresponding invoices and that simply doesn't make any sense. What happens if other companies like mine want to make edits to their items after creating numerous transactions?
