list segments, contacts and automations

Hi, I use marketing automation version 2 beta and I'm trying to figure out what the intended use is and How we're supposed to use the relationship between lists, segments, and contacts. when and how are Liz supposed to be used. are lists filters of segments or vice versa? What about custom Fields and segments versus custom fields and lists? I'm not sure how to use these things together or how they're intended to be used
