Next years Vacation counting this Year

We allow for vacation days to 100% carry forward to the next year AND we allow for employees to request leaves in the next calendar year. My issue is if an employee runs out of vacation days in the current year and they request vacation that crosses both years it doesn't show has a negative in the current year.

EXAMPLE:

Employee receives 15 vacation days per year and have used 14 days in 2023

Employee has 1 day left of vacation in 2023 - they request 5 business days off from December 28, 2023 to January 4, 2024, the request is allowing them to use 2024 days to cover the 2023 deficit. (Instead of showing negative 1 in 2023 it applies vacation time from their 2024 allotment to 2023. How do I fix this?
