We are wondering if there is a way to trigger a workflow after two records are merged?

We have a sms service that use to text back and forth with Prospects and Contacts. To make it easy for our users, we automatically create them in this other system, and also keep them up to date when there is a new phone number.  What we haven't come up with is a way to handle Contact merges.  From everything we've seen, there isn't a way to trigger a workflow off of two Contacts being merged.

Any ideas out there for a way to trigger a workflow from this?
