Tips and Tricks #24: Resize objects using Show

Hi folks,

In today's tip, we're covering an easy method for re-sizing images and other objects when converting your presentation from one aspect ratio to another. Our Show web app offers two presentation aspect ratios, one for Widescreen mode (16:9) and the other for Normal screen mode (4:3).

A 16:9 ratio is ideal for casting presentations on Smart Tv's in a meeting room. Likewise, a 4:3 (standard) ratio is ideal for viewing on small screens, like a laptop or mobile device, and for printing presentations.

Tip: To cast presentations on big screen, identify which aspect ratio the casting device will support to produce high intensity output.

When you convert presentations or slide elements from one aspect ratio on another, the elements tend to lose their resolution or be automatically cropped in a way you don't want.

Luckily, Show offers a separate field for different aspect ratios. By enabling the Maintain Aspect Ratio field, you can resize your objects regardless of the slide dimensions. When using the correct aspect ratios, you can also ensure effective utilization of your screen space. Additionally, when you insert images in placeholder frames, you'll see the placeholder crops the image to fit perfectly.

You may resize an object however you wish and still keep the perfect dimension by switching between aspect ratios.

Note: This concept holds well even for single objects in the slides.

Here's an example to show how you can use these aspect ratios in presentations:

To maintain the aspect ratio of your objects in Show's web app:
  1. Open the slide with objects whose aspect ratio you want to maintain.
  2. Press the Command key to enable the multi-selection feature and select the object.
  3. Click any other objects you want to select in the slide.
  4. Click the Format icon, then click Arrange and go to the Size section.
  5. Click the Maintain Aspect Ratio checkbox to adjust the dimensions of the shapes proportionately.
  6. Adjust either Width or Height. Based on the value you set, the other parameter automatically updates.

Tip: In the Show web app, you can resize objects directly using the Shift key instead of clicking the Maintain Aspect Ratio checkbox.

To maintain the aspect ratio of objects in Show's Android app:
  1. Open the slide with objects whose aspect ratio you want to maintain.
  2. Long press an object to enable the selection feature and select the object.
  3. Tap any other objects you want to select in the slide.
  4. Click the Format icon, then click Arrange and Size & Position to open the panel.
  5. Tap the Maintain Aspect Ratio checkbox to adjust the dimensions of the shapes proportionately.
  6. Adjust either Width or Height. Based on the value you set, the other parameter automatically updates.
