ZMA - Filtering special characters in emails ?

It's known that you can use the + symbol in gmail for creating an array of alternate emails connected to the original account : eg firstnamesurname+anything@gmail.com. I was using this format to test the routing on our webforms but it's not working now - is this a new change ?
