Duplicate entry issue we're having

I am having a huge issue with duplicate entries. Is there a way to merge duplicates. There should not be 2 profiles with the same email address. If 2 profiles have the same email address and/or other attributes that clearly show it's the same person, can we merge these? I'd like to do this for all of the candidates in our database.
