Historical Records when customer email address changes

When an email address is changed on a customer record, all past invoices for subs under that customer now show the new email address instead of the one it was originally sent to.   This makes it very hard to put together a history of account.    

Do the related events (invoice notification, for example) maintain an accurate historical record of the event or does the email address change in there as well?
