Tip of the Week: Task Dependency
Task Dependency - a feature that allows the users to establish dependency / linking between tasks within the project.
Points to be noted with respect to this feature:
- Task Dependency can be set only from the Dependency View section within the Tasks & Milestones module
- Tasks setup with duration (start & end date) will only be displayed in the Dependency View
- The supported dependency model is Finish to Start
- Dependency can be established only between the tasks in the same project
- A task can be dependent on multiple tasks too
- This feature is available in all the editions
Let us see how this feature works:
Once you are in the Dependency View section, click the Predecessor column against the dependent task. Then, input the sequence number of the preceding task and press the Enter key.
In the image below, the start date of "Finalize the meeting location" task and end date of "Prepare agenda for the meeting" task fall on the same day. So, establishing dependency between these tasks is not possible.

As the start date of "Finalize the meeting location" task is modified to a date after the end date of "Prepare agenda for the meeting" task, linking / establishing dependency between them is possible. Refer the image below.

Benefits of this feature in Zoho Projects:
- Date Auto-Shift i.e The duration of the dependent task gets modified, automatically, when the end date of preceding task is shifted to a date after the start date of dependent task.
- Hierarchical Task Completion i.e The dependent task can be completed only when the preceding task is completed.
