Creating and linking data to unique identities

I'm very new to this so this is probably a silly question but how do I create a unique identity for people and organisations so that I can then link individual people and their data to an individual organisation.

What I need to do is to create a list of organisations and a list of people and then be able to create forms that show the details of individuals in that organisations.

So what I want to do is to create a person (first name, last name) then add details of their job and the organisation they work for.  I want to be able to import the organisation name from a drop down list from data in another form, and I then want to create a report that show organisations with the names and appointments of the people who work there - and another report that shows the person with their job and organisation details.

What I can't work out is how to import the data for a specific individual into the organisation report without having to key in that person's name each time.

Like I say this is probably very simple but I'm missing it and would appreciate any help!
