Deprecating support for older desktop email clients on older versions of Operating Systems (OS)

Who is this post applicable to:
This post is applicable to you if you are accessing your emails via desktop email clients like Outlook, MacMail, Thunderbird etc via POP/ IMAP. In case you are using only your webmail via www.zoho.com/mail in a browser or/and use the native mobile apps, then this post is not applicable to you. 

Even when using mobile clients like Outlook/ MacMail/ Thunderbird, if you are using the latest versions of the applications in the updated Operating Sytems, you are secure and you need not worry. 

This post is applicable to users using desktop clients or legacy applications which accesses the account via TLS 1.0/ TLS 1.1 protocols. 

What is this post about: 
To ensure secure communications and access to your account only via secure email clients, we will be stopping support for TLS 1.0/ TLS 1.1 protocols and weack ciphers like RC4 which are used by some old email clients for establishing connection to our servers to retrieve emails. We will be stopping support for these protocols from October 15, 2020

TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1 and RC4 Ciphers are less secure and old protocols that do not support modern cryptographic algorithms. These versions of protocols and cipher suites are less secure and are vulnerable, which the attackers can take advantage of and exploit the network.  The IETF is also planning to officially deprecate these protocols. A vast majority of encrypted Internet traffic is now over TLS 1.2, which was introduced more than a decade back. 

We request you to update or upgrade your email clients to latest OS/ client version to continue using the emails from the email clients before October 15, 2020.

In case you are are unable to upgrade for some reason, you need to change your email client configuration to the below hostnames based on the data centers.

EU Data Centers:  (Existing mail.zoho.eu users)

If you are using old email clients, either you should upgrade the client versions or change the configurations as suggested above. The current configurations will stop working for older email clients from October 15, 2020.
