How to have the subfolder trees opened up when there are new messages tucked hidden within them?

How to have the subfolder trees opened up when there are new messages tucked hidden within them? Is there a configuration parameter for it?

I have three to four levels of subfolders like X.Y.Z.Q. A filter delivers a message to Q. Other than through Unread mail there is no way to determine if there is a message awaiting in folder Q.

Can you open up the subfolders when there are messages in them?
