Mixed order: stock item and business purchase

Hi, I'm just getting started with Inventory, and I haven't been able to find an answer to this.

I am a small service business, and am just starting to sell products (in very low numbers). From my vendor, I purchase both items that I will on-sell, which I would like tracked in Inventory, and equipment that I use for my business, which shouldn't appear in Inventory at all.

How do I set this up with purchase orders etc so that it all works out? i.e. I can track the goods, with appropriate purchase prices/stock levels/etc in Inventory, and I can keep the other items out of Inventory but record them correctly in Books.
