Tab spaces disappear when document is imported

I am using the Zoho Writer Remote API as part of my site.

Suppose I have a Microsoft Word document that uses tab spaces for lining up columns in a chart. If I copy and paste this into Zoho, I see that my columns are still lined up properly, and that the tab spaces were seamlessly converted into the appropriate number of regular spaces. However, if I import the document into Zoho, I see that the columns are no longer lined up, and that each tab space has been converted into just one regular space.
