Templates and page size

Have made several attempts to save a home letter header template. All remains fairly consistent, except that the template format of A4 reverts to 'letter' size (i.e., not A4) for the created document. Is there anyway in which an 'A4' template can be used to create an A4 document - without having to reselect the new document's page size?
