Deal Stage component/widget/whatever it is... event

Deal Stages

I am trying to access the event and value of this component. I can do it by changing the Stage field but users can also change a Deal Stage via this component and I need to be able to capture both values. Clicking on 'Verbal' for instance, does NOT trigger a stage update change.

Any ideas? Haven't seen a way to do this in client script, and workflows/functions are incomplete solutions.
