Editing Linked Events

We input several reoccurring (weekly) events. In the description we list who's attending these events. When there is a change to attendance we update the description, and save "only". However, we are finding in doing this that more often than not we are ending up with a duplicate event on the same day/time. One with the original data (for the reoccurring event) and one with the edited data (for the one time only change).
