How to set up an app

I need to set up an app for our people in the field to be able to see dashboards in advanced CRM and reports, and also be able to search for projects. Can someone point me in the right direction to get started setting up the apps? For some reason I can't seem to find anything on customizing apps. Just a tutorial page or a place to get started would help greatly.
