The Social Playbook July edition: Storytelling in marketing

Stories have been a part of our lives since we were kids. For many of us, our grandparents told us tales, and our parents used narratives to help us eat or sleep on time. Even before we realized it, we were naturally drawn to storytelling. Because anything told with a bit of emotion and curiosity becomes more than just information—it becomes a story. And that’s what makes it so powerful.

Now imagine brands using that same power to communicate with us. Stories work in marketing because they make people feel. Instead of just sharing information, they create an emotional connection that stays with the audience.
That’s the power of storytelling. It doesn’t just inform, it influences.

How brands use storytelling

Brands use storytelling by creating narratives around their product, purpose, positioning, and audience. Instead of just selling what they offer, they build stories that people can relate to, believe in, and remember.

Let’s look at how some brands do this effectively:

Red Bull

Red Bull doesn’t just sell an energy drink; it sells a lifestyle. With its famous line, “Red Bull gives you wings,” the brand positions itself around energy, adventure, and pushing limits. Instead of focusing on the drink, it creates stories around people doing extraordinary things.

A great example is the Red Bull Stratos, where a skydiver jumped from the edge of space. This wasn’t just an event; it was a story of courage, risk-taking, and human potential. Through this, Red Bull builds a narrative that connects the drink with boldness, performance, and adventure.

Nike

Nike uses storytelling to inspire. Its iconic slogan, “Just Do It,” is more than a tagline; it’s a mindset. Nike’s stories focus on overcoming challenges, pushing limits, and achieving personal goals.

Whether it’s professional athletes or everyday people, Nike tells stories that make you feel like you can do it too. The product becomes secondary—the real focus is the emotion of determination and self-belief.

Dove

Dove focuses on real people and real issues. With its “Real Beauty” campaigns, Dove tells stories that challenge traditional beauty standards. Instead of idealized images, it highlights authenticity, self-confidence, and inclusivity.

By addressing issues like body image and social pressure, Dove turns its marketing into something bigger—a social conversation. This creates a deep emotional connection and builds strong trust with its audience.

Why these work

In all three cases, the brands aren't just selling products. They're selling:
  1.  A feeling (Red Bull – excitement)
  2.  A mindset (Nike – determination)
  3.  A belief (Dove – self-acceptance)
That’s the real power of storytelling in marketing.

Why we use storytelling in marketing

  1. Easy to remember – Stories stay in our minds longer than plain information.
  2. Relatable – People connect more with situations and emotions than facts.
  3. Simplifies complex ideas – Stories make even complicated messages easy to understand.
  4. Builds connection – It helps brands create a genuine emotional bond with the audience.
Now that we’ve seen why storytelling works, let’s look at how you can bring it into your brand using a simple framework.

The recipe for storytelling in marketing using the Moment – Meaning – Message Framework (MMM framework)

If you strip storytelling down to its core, it’s actually quite simple. You don’t need big budgets or dramatic scripts—sometimes all it takes is a small moment told well.

This is where the Moment – Meaning – Message framework comes in.

Moment

Start with a small, relatable scene. Something your audience has experienced or felt before. It could be a conversation, a memory, a daily struggle, or even a simple habit. Because the more real it feels, the more it pulls people in.

Meaning

Now, go a little deeper. What does that moment actually mean? What emotion is hidden behind it? This is where your story starts to connect—when people don’t just see the moment, they feel it.

Message

Finally, bring in your brand. Not as a hard sell, but as a natural part of the story. Your product becomes the bridge, the solution, or even just a quiet presence that completes the moment.

Take a small moment -> add emotion -> connect it to your brand

To understand this better, let’s look at how a brand brings this framework to life.

  1. Moment - An elderly man shares a simple childhood memory of his best friend from across the border, a small, relatable moment of nostalgia.
  2. Meaning - As the story unfolds, it reveals deeper emotions, loss, longing, and the pain of separation over years, something many people can emotionally connect with.
  3. Message - Google is positioned as the bridge that reconnects people, showing how technology can bring back lost relationships and moments.
A small memory -> turned into deep emotion -> connected back to the brand

Common mistakes we make in brand storytelling

  1. Lack of clarity - When the story isn’t conveyed clearly, the audience gets confused and loses interest.
  2. Misunderstanding the message - If the core idea isn’t well-defined, the story may send the wrong message.
  3. Ignoring audience sensitivity - Stories that overlook cultural or emotional sensitivity can harm the brand’s image.
  4. Lack of authenticity - If the story feels fake or forced, audiences won’t trust the brand.
At the end of the day, people may forget what you said, but they’ll always remember how you made them feel. And that’s exactly what storytelling does. It turns simple messages into meaningful connections.

So the next time you think about marketing, don’t just share information—tell a story.
