Beginner - How to Preserve Opt Out Status When Importing Contacts?

Greetings.

Please forgive the elementary question. We’re struggling to get started in Campaigns.

We have 2,500 customers in Lightspeed Retail POS. In the Lightspeed interface, some are marked as opting in to email marketing and some as opting out.

Our goal is simple: use Campaigns to send a message once a month to those marked as opting in.

We think the first step is to export the customers from Lightspeed to a CSV file. The only option in Lightspeed is to export them all. In the CSV file, Lightspeed includes a column headed "do_not_email." The data in this column will be either 0 (for those opting in) or 1 (for those opting out).

We can successfully import the file into Campaigns. But we do not see how to ensure that Campaigns does not send messages to those with do_not_email=1 in the CSV file. It seems that we must assign the same subscription type to all the contacts during import to Campaigns.
