Protect yourself from web pixels

Protect yourself from web pixels

Some emails track you. Let us tell you which ones do.

We receive a myriad of emails on a daily basis. The majority of them are usually newsletters and promotional emails, probably from your favorite store or that website you gave your email address a long time ago and most likely forgot all about.

Besides sending these emails to you, these companies want to know if their emails are being read so they can use that information for their marketing purposes. Using a web pixel is how they'd achieve this.

What is a web pixel?

A web pixel is simply a 1 x 1 tracking pixel that might be embedded in the emails you receive. You won’t be able to see this pixel, but it can pick up your private data like the date and time of you opening that email, your location and IP address and report that data back to the sender.

How does Zoho Mail alert you?

Zoho Mail automatically identifies emails that contain a web pixel and shows you a warning message. When you open an email embedded with a tracking web pixel, you can see a unique symbol denoting this.

You can simply Unsubscribe from this sender, which means that any future emails they send will go straight to the spam folder. Otherwise, you can choose to take further measures, like completely blocking and rejecting future emails from that particular sender.

At Zoho Mail, we’re working on blocking email tracking even further. The feature will empower the admin to allow or block tracking emails completely, based on their email privacy preferences.
