Losing lead creation date when converting to customer and potentials?

My problem - Currently when you create a new lead in Z CRM it is time & date stamped, once you convert the lead to a customer it is then re stamped with a new time and date losing the original information. 

The reason this is important is when you want to run a report to see how many leads you generated each week the numbers are incorrect as hopefully some will have been converted to customers and sales. 

My question - Is there a way to keep the information so i can run the required report as this seems to be a logical stat any company would want to know.

Now, you can view the Lead's history and interaction in the Contacts, Accounts and Deals module, after conversion.
