Using the MS Exchange Sync module - basic authentication required?

I am investigating the use of the MS Exchange Sync module to replace access via IMAP.
According to the instructions in
https://help.zoho.com/portal/en/kb/crm/extensions/team-collaboration/articles/microsoft-exchange-administrator-guide#Prerequisites
, one of the prerequisites is to have Basic Authentication enabled. So do i understand correctly that this means a service account or user credentials must be input into the MS Exchange Sync module for it to work correctly?
