You cannot delete the domain as it has verified email addresses

If you are attempting to delete a domain from your Zoho organization and receive an error like this, it is because the domain still has active users, verified email addresses, or verified email addresses associated with subdomains linked to it.

Why is this restriction in place?

  1. Data Loss Prevention: Deleting a domain immediately terminates associated mailboxes. This safeguard ensures you don't accidentally wipe out critical business emails and data.
  2. Security (Account Takeover Protection): If you delete a domain in Zoho but forget to remove the users, and that domain later expires and is purchased by someone else, the new owner could potentially verify the domain and gain access to orphaned account data.
  3. Dependency Management: Subdomains rely on the primary domain's verification status.
Info
If your domain has already expired and you no longer have DNS access, deleting the domain will automatically delete the associated email addresses.

How can I delete the domain now?

To delete your domain, you need to remove the associated email addresses and subdomains. Follow the below steps to delete your domain.

Step 1: Remove or Change user email addresses

You cannot delete a domain while users are still using it.
  1. Option A: Change the users' email addresses to a different verified domain.
  2. Option B: Delete the users entirely if they are no longer needed.

Step 2: Remove Subdomains

Navigate to your domain settings page and ensure any subdomains (e.g., mail.example.com or dev.example.com) are deleted first. You need to dissociate all the email addresses associated with subdomains.

Step 3: Delete the domain

Once all associations are removed, proceed to deletion of the domain.
