10 suggestions for Global Search
Global search is great! And it is new so we know you may have improvements coming :-)
Suggestions:
DEFINING "SEARCH OPTIONS"
add these settings and of course obey them in the UI and searching:
* Whether that form is available at all for Global Search. (If no, ignore all settings and do NOT show in GS dropdown, and do not search that form.)
* Which columns to display (already available) --but please actually show all fields selected, not just the first 7)
* Which fields are actually to be searched
* A hard FILTER (just like for any report). Example, for some forms, to exclude "Inactive" records.
* The name of the Report to jump to when user selects "See on Report" (see below) from the search results.
SEARCH BEHAVIOR
* All searching should be CONTAINS. Sometimes it behaves that way, sometimes you have to use wildcards. (Or else please explain why/when wildcards sometimes are needed, sometimes are assumed.)
THE "GLOBAL SEARCH" UI
* Perhaps an Account option to NOT allow users to choose which forms are searched - ie, the Admin selects which forms are searched and users cannot change this.
* Remember user's choice for which forms to search. (is currently lost upon re-login)
* An easier "search this list" ability. Perhaps a toggle "This List" (searches current table) and "Global" (follows usual set of selected tables).
IN THE SEARCH RESULTS DISPLAY
* Highlight of cells/words that match search criteria.
* "See on Report" -A way to jump to an actual Report view (the report defined above in search settings), pre-filtered to show (a) the same list of multiple records if clicked from the header, or (b) just that record (if clicked from the record).
