Formatting in translated survey

I'm putting together a bilingual survey that has some basic formatting (line breaks, italics, email links) in some of the "descriptive text" boxes as well as the survey conclusion page.
Unfortunately, attempting to reproduce this formatting on the translated survey is a nightmare. Using HTML tags in the text boxes provided for translations is unreliable: when first saved, although some of the characters are converted to hex codes the formatting displays properly in preview. When the translation is saved a second time however, such as to fix a typo, the formatting is lost and broken tags (e.g. </a>) are displayed in preview instead.
How can I address this issue?
