Freeze Panes - Lock Rows and Columns

Freeze Panes - Lock Rows and Columns

A new sub forum, 'Tips and Tricks', has been added to the Zoho Sheet forum and we are planning post tips and howtos related to Zoho Sheet in this sub forum. The first topic deals with Freeze Panes.

When you have a large table of data spanning multiple rows and columns, it becomes difficult to keep track of which data you are looking at as you scroll down or to the right. The 'Freeze Panes' functionality solves this by allowing you to lock the row and column headings in place. These locked rows and columns will always be displayed even while scrolling down/right the spreadsheet.

Using Zoho Sheet, you can freeze up to the first 5 columns and/or the first 5 rows. Here is how you will need to apply Freeze Panes under different scenarios.
  • To freeze the first 2 rows, you need to select the 3rd row and then apply Freeze Panes.
  • To freeze the first column, you need to select the 2nd column and then apply Freeze Panes.
  • To freeze the first 4 rows as well as the first 2 columns, you need to click on the cell below row 4 and to the right of column B, i.e., cell C5 and then apply Freeze Panes.
The basic idea is that you should select the first cell from where you want the scrollable area to start. The rows and columns above and before this cell will be locked in place.

You can apply Freeze Panes either from the 'More' menu or from the right click context menu. Here are a couple of screenshots depicting how to access the Freeze Panes functionality.

And finally, here is a video of Freeze Panes in action:

'Freeze Top Row' and 'Freeze First Column' options have been recently provided to enable you to freeze the top row or the first column quickly irrespective of the current active cell.
